  • F317066CL9T-6GBPS REPORT - problems:insane voltages needed to run way lower than spec

The system is completely stable, tested up to 12 hours with PRIME95 Blend and Intel Burn Test(20 pass Xtreme stress , Maximum(around 5 GBs,32 threads).

I bought the DDR32133 rated F3 17066cl9 6GBPS kit and tried to run it at its specs(ddr3 2133 and tried to get to ddr3 2000 as well).

I started using the XMP profile to see if the memory worked out of the box(settings were the same as above besides bclk=133,ddr3=2133 and qpi=4800 and vcore=1.2 and cpuvtt voltages) at the rated speed (as it SHOULD)

As i feared(i never saw one of these xmp profiles working, just setting xmp profile from the bios),it did not work

    - cpuvtt(qpi/dram volt) 1.45 NO BOOT

    - cpuvtt(qpi/dram volt) 1.5 BOOT
I entered in the bios and the timings detected were
    1st info 9 9 9 24 6 82 15 10 30 0
    2nd info 2N 66 67 67
    3rd info 6 6 20 10 10 10 7 6 4 7 7 4
It did NOT ENTER windows though

    - cpuvtt(qpi/dram volt) 1.55 It locked during windows loading animation
At this point i tried to raise IOH Volt to 1.31 but it did not
    sort any result

    - cpuvtt(qpi/dram volt) 1.65 AND dramV=1.75 IOHvolt=1.4 ICH=1.2
FINALLY it entered windows(with anything less it would NOT
    enter)
I launched 1 instance of memtest with 1024 MB and it passed
With two instances of memtest(1024) concurrent it freezed
I decided not to push voltages further because i don't want to
risk to burn my cpu,and i don't really think that a memory can
be rated to run at 50% more voltage on the cpuvtt!!!
With BCLK lowered to 130(ddr3 2088) i managed to pass 5 concurrent instances of
1 GB with memtest(more or less all the memory available)
BUT, and i want to underline this BUT, IBT (that uses linpack)
freezed as soon as i launched it at such speed, so it was far from stable.

    SO i conclude DDR3 2133 Quest ------> FAILED

    - DDR3 2000 QUEST
The MINIMUM voltages needed to run STABLY (20 pass IBT 32threads , 5335MB used , xtreme stress mode)it at DDR3 2000 with timings of 9 9 9 24 2T and with a tRFC=88 (much higher than what the memory should be able to do even at 2133) were
    cpuvtt=1,64375 IOH=1.41 DRAM volt=1.736
cpu temp went upto a maximum of 63? (LCD poster)with ambient temperature of around 25 deg during IBT 2 hours test,so it
cannot be this the problem and dimm were never more than SLIGHTLY warm at the touch
These are freaking insane high voltages to run a memory at ddr32000 with looser timings
than those that would be needed(as rated ) to run it ddr3 2133.Please note that NONE of this voltages lowered even of a pinch would make the memory run stablility test.
Before testing all dimms together i tested each single dimm and managed to run it stably with the same timings at ddr3 2000 with slightly lower voltages of cpuvtt=1.60625 dram volt=1,736 and ioh=1.35.
All the other settings for the ddr3 2000 speed were those listed at the beginning of the post.

P.S. : At such high cpuvtt voltages ,usually, Voltage detected from LCD poster for QPI/DRAM voltage(cpuvtt) is 0.05Volt less than what set in the bios.Keep this in mind when checking my voltages

NOW WHAT I WANT TO ASK TO THE TECH SUPPORT :
IS THIS NORMAL? ARE THESE DIMM BAD SINCE THEY NEED SUCH HIGH VOLTAGES?(I NOTICED THAT NOT ONLY A HIGH CPUVTT VOLTAGE IS NEEDED TO RUN THEM, BUT THEY WON'T RUN AT DDR32000 WITH ANYTHING LESS THAN dram volt=1.736 VOLT).
I AM SO DISAPPOINTED FROM >400$ (HERE IN EUROPE) MEMORY KIT.IT COSTED MORE THAN MY I7 920!!!!

Ps.:i read all the posts relative to perfect storm dimms in ddr3 section, and none of the settings suggested worked,so i would ask for different solutions

Post complete BIOS settings of your attempt, otherwise it is very difficult to understand/troubleshoot the issue. I don't know all the settings you used, so it's hard to determine where the issue lies. What I can tell you that this memory package surely does not need that high of voltage to operate at its rated speed.

      Thank you

Here's where i specified bios settings used
I specified only those that are changed compared to the first ones i listed in detail in the beginning of the first post

Given that those voltages were the absolute minimum needed and that in the case of 2133 mhz test there was not a single Mhz overclock on the cpu, should i rma them?
As you can see the best i could attain with 1600 MHZ is 6-7-6-15 tRFC=60 and CR=1 with cpuvtt=1.375 and dramV=1.65681,that is the same that i managed to obtain with a Team Group 2000 MHz(9-9-9 CR=2).So i managed the same as that kit that costed though 250$.Given that this is rated 2133 with the same timings i expected at least to obtain (6-6-6).ANyway it is not to go at 1600 that i bought this kit...

I know it is long to read, but there are written all details of attempts made to reach 2000,2133(that was never able with stability),and 1600 with tightest timings possible, but if you read, there is written everything.

So your goal is 4.2GHz with DDR3-2000? You will need to have spot on voltages to do so, otherwise anything slightly off will cause instability. The i7 920 may not even be able to operate at those speeds. I would suggest lowering the CPU overclock first, test the memory's limits, then work on finding the ideal frequencies and voltages.

I need to know exact settings of attempt, otherwise I have no idea what's going on. You're talking 1600, 2000, oc, no oc, low voltage, high voltage, too many things going on you can't properly troubleshoot the issue and locate where the problem lies.

                Thank you

If you have the patience to read carefully,it is clearly indicated what are settings for every attempt. There is a report of every attempt made(2133,2000,1600).
2133 was attempted with not a Mhz of CPU oc,
2000 Mhz was attempted at 200 Bclk like people in at least other 10 threads attempted and managed to do with trident cl9 kit(wasy slower than this)!
1600 is the one thing i managed to obtain with decent voltages(not even 6-6-6)
                  DId you at least read?
I am sorry but you say that i have not written things that i have indeed specified.

                    THIS IS MY 2133 TRY
SETTINGS USED ARE THE SAME IN THE TABLE ABOVE BESIDES THE ONE THAT I SPECIFIED TO BE DIFFERENT(IT IS IN RED)
As you can see they simply won't do 2133.The most they do(memtest stable but NOT IBT stable) is 2088 at ridiculous loose timings(at least ridiculous if compared to what they are rated for)
XMP simply doesn't work ,with any amount of voltages given to the cpuvtt.

                    SO i conclude DDR3 2133 Quest ------> FAILED
THIS IS MY 2000 TRY (SETTINGS ARE THE SAME AS THE ONES LISTED IN DETAIL IN THE BEGINNING BESIDES THE ONE SPECIFIED TO BE DIFFERENT AS IT IS WRITTEN IN RED)

                    cpuvtt=1,64375 IOH=1.41 DRAM volt=1.736
cpu temp went upto a maximum of 63?
                    AND THIS IS MY QUESTION

IS THIS NORMAL? ARE THESE DIMM BAD SINCE THEY NEED SUCH HIGH VOLTAGES?(I NOTICED THAT NOT ONLY A HIGH CPUVTT VOLTAGE IS NEEDED TO RUN THEM, BUT THEY WON'T RUN AT DDR3 2000 WITH ANYTHING LESS THAN dram volt=1.736 VOLT).

You're simply not using the correct settings. The CPU won't want to run bclk=133,ddr3=2133.

Try BCLK 178 and change everything else accordingly. You do not need more than 1.65V to operate DDR3-2133 with these, so no need to blast the voltage up simply because you can't get it to work.

Try these settings and let me know how it goes:

I just tried your settings and it neither posts.
Bumping cpuvtt to 1.5 was of no use.1.6 volt cpuvtt->no post as well. 1.65 cpuvtt->no post
My settings were the minimum.Anyway i don't see why 178*16 would work better than 133(that is the stock). It doesn't seem that the memory multiplier you suggest works better than mine.
Actually the only thing that made it work at 2133 is

                        bclk 133
                        multi 20
                        cpuvtt 1.65
                        dramv 1.75
                        ioh 1.4
                        uncore 4266
                        dram 2133
                        qpi 4800

It works but it makes error in memtest...Just 2 concurrent instances of 1024 MB memtest make it error an unnumbered way of times...

ANyway 1.64 cpuvtt was needed to run 2000!!!I doubt anything less will make 2133 work...
Your 1.4 is simply not likely to ever happen.I never saw in this forum or in any other one ddr2000 running stably with anything less than 1.45-1.5 cpuvtt(closer to 1.5 than to 1.45).
                        I really tried everything.
To finish:voltages that i used in 2000 try are the very least needed to run 2000 stably with bclk of 200.I got there incrementally and a pinch less in any of the voltages will make the system NOT stable.SO actually bumping voltages like that was indeed needed. You say that it is not needed to bump that much voltages.I answer that without those bumps memory simply won't work.

                        ANy other sugestion?
XMP simply doesn't work with any kinf of cpuvtt voltages.Again:Are these dimm bad?

                          Hello admin,any other advice?
The last one you gave me didn't work. This memory just doesn't work with 2133,and barely does with 2000.
I don't think that many here would consider acceptable settings i used to make it run at 2000.
SO please can u answer to the first question that i made one week ago?
Is this kit a kit to rma?

I feel really disappointed. In over one week, this thread had 13 posts, three of which from Tech SUpport who clearly showed in two of the three neither having read my first one.I opened this thread also because i needed to know if the behaviour of this product was normal or not,so that in case it was not a malfunctioning problem of the one i bought,i could give it back(voltages needed to make it run aren't acceptable ).Now i found myself in the not at all enviable position of having spent 400$ for smth that is basically advertised for what it is not: a 2133 kit.
Is tech support ever going to do what is supposed to do it :tech SUPPORT????
Is this the way one is going to be treated by G.SKILL after giving them 400$?It would suck even if this kit costed 40$.
