  • 3 channel memory upgrade question

I'm working on overclocking a Dell T3500 workstation with X58 chipset LGA1366 that supports 3 channel memory. The CPU overclock is OK, but the RAM is going to run at 1.5V and whatever timing it defaults to at DDR3 1333 speed. I can run 6x2GB, 3x4GB, (6x4GB.max. offficial support) I'm looking at the 3 channel kits and saw one that said "tested" CL7. Does this mean it's default speed is CL7 or that it's capable of that when set manually? I don't have XMP, or manual control of RAM timings, so 3 channel low latency is a s good as it gets for this system. The 4GB modules say tested, the 2GB just list CL7 speed.

    CL7 would be DDR3-1066

For that computer, DDR3-1333 CL9 1.50V is your best set.

Did you end up getting DDR3-1333 CL9 1.50V? How was it?

Thanks for the reply. I wandered off into the world of E bikes for a while. It was more imprtant to me because i have skin in the game urban riding in South Florida.
I guess the safe bet would be DDR3 1333 CL9. The complication with these X58 computers is the memory controller is on the CPU, and everything changes with that. A Nehalem Xeon, and a Westmere Xeon will have different speeds available. I'm going to start out with a W3570 unlocked Nehalem and the generic 12GB RAM it came with. When I get to the W3690 unlocked Westmere/Gulftown then I'll have the best RAM controller.
I have another computer with DDR3 1333 CL9 modules running at 1066 speed and CL7. I was wondering if I bought DDR3 1600 CL9 if it would run at 1333CL7? Since I can't overclock the fsb/RAM, latency is all I can change. I'm also curious what the latency would be at 1066 with 1600CL9 modules. Nobody seems to publish these 2ndary timings. I'm just worried if I buy faster RAM will the CPU/chipset be able to use it at all? If i knew what timings a DDR3 1600 CL9 ran at 1333 i could ask around the overclocking forums if the chipset/CPU supports those timings. Or do they just run what the module tells them to run?

          i wonder the same
