  • Unable to use XMP profiles or get past 1600

    I have the: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) F3-2133C9D-8GXL

So far, enabling XMP profiles 1 and 2 results in a boot failure. Going in and manually adjusting the timings works, however if I manually change the speed to >1600, it will not boot. I have tried to change the DRAM voltage, but that doesn't work either. For some reason, my bios won't let me do 1.65v, but it will let me put in 1.64v and 1.66v.

Here are some pictures of the current state:

Not sure if its my processor or mobo that's holding me back.

    System Specs:
    Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3
    i5 2500k 3.3 Overclocked to 4.0
    EVGA GTX770
    Corsair TX650w

    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried just using one stick at a time? You could have a bad stick if they wont boot at 1600... id try each by themselves and see ifbthe two perform differently

Edit: i see they will boot at 1600? Either way try each stick separately to see if they'll boot on xmp settings alone... if so maybe raise vicco a bit and see if that helps

I haven't tried that, but I would assume both are working if they are at 1600 with 9-11-11-31 timings. Wouldn't that be correct?

In addition to the XMP Profile, raise VCCIO Voltage to stabilize the CPU memory controller. 1.10V should be good for DDR3-2133. Keep us posted on the result.

          Thank you

Well I tried a bunch of things, still didn't work. I tried to use XMP profiles and manually set them as well, using VTT voltage at 1.10 and DRAM at 1.64 (My mobo only accepts 1.64 or 1.66).

Since I threw away the box, is there still an option to return these for a faster set of 1600 sticks? I'm pretty sure my mobo + cpu combination is what is holding me back from getting 2133 or even 1866 timings.

Side question- If I am currently running at 9-11-11-31-2N @ 1600, how much of a difference in gaming performance would I see if I went to the 7-8-8-24 @ 1600 G.Skill sticks?

The answer to that question is simple, use those settings and find out. When you slow the memory down from its rated speed you can lower the timings as well. Just play with them until you find something that works for you, (lots of memory benchmarks in your future if you want to maximize things). I'd start with 8-9-9-27 at 1600 and go down from there from there (should be able to do better than that but I figure that is pretty much fail safe) can likely get the setting you mentioned out of that kit.

Edit: I have 2 sets of that memory (in one machine) rated for 1600 at 9-9-9-27 and they'll run at 8-9-9-27 all day long, but I run them at 10-10-10-28 at 1866 instead, Yours should have better chips than mine, I get those timings at 1.52v

I went through the exact same thing last week, but I have an Intel mobo, same thing xmp wouldnt work, no boot situations, tested both ram sticks with memtest, tried every trick supahos gave me, (thanks again!) what fixed my problem was doing a firmware update on my Bios, not easy but after 2 versions up, xmp works, 2133 mhz speed, no more boot issues. oh yeah, if you do decide to upgrade bios, check your sata settings after mine wouldnt boot because the bios update reset my sata settings to RAID instead of Ahci or achi I forget how it is spelt. Hope this helps
