  • Server vs Desktop Motherboard

I'm looking to replace my desktop motherboard which is begging to slowly fail, and I'm faced with limited options.

What's the difference, if any, of operating a desktop system with an Intel server motherboard ( ie: http://ark.intel.com/products/46543/...oard-S3210SHLC ) with a Q6600 and non-ecc, unbuffered memory, and a standard desktop gpu versus a desktop motherboard?

Some server mainboards don't accept non-ECC memory at all, that varies from model to model though. Also the usual featureset differs from desktop mainboards. For example you will rarely find a audio chipset on a server mainboard, the boot times are usually longer and I/O options are more limited (S3210SHLC only has 5x USB in total).

Supports non-ecc/unbuffered memory and PCIe x 16. I'm just asking for the actual differences, if any, not concerned about the amount of USB inputs, onboard GPU, or sound. I'm concerned about compatibility and performance.

Compatibility with what? Performance depends mostly upon CPU, Memory and GPU used.

Xeon CPU and ECC RAM for servers, but some desktop can support Xeon CPU and some server mobo can support non-ECC
