  • Memory for Optiplex 780

I'm trying put 16GB into a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF, using 2 pairs of 2x4GB memory.

The following doc says it supports 1066 or 1333 memory (thought it will run at 1066):
    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global...tech-guide.pdf

    CPU is Core2 Q9550, Intel Q45 Express Chipset w/ICH10DO

Will one of these work? If not, what will?

    F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL
    F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL

    Thanks!

Those kits will not work as your motherboard does not support 4GB modules.

You will need to purchase one of these:

    Thank you

Check the documentation I linked to before, which says the SFF case I use does support 16GB:

      http://www.dell.com/downloads/global...tech-guide.pdf

There is some discrepancy in the online docs, I guess because one of the cases for the 780 (ultra small FF) does only support 8GB. I filed a support ticket with Dell to verify and they claim that the non USFF 780's will indeed take 16GB.

Do you have experience / documentation that would suggest otherwise?

      Thanks for your help,

The Q45 chipset only supports 8GB of DDR3.

        http://www.intel.com/products/deskto...5-overview.htm

Not many express chipsets support 16GB, I don't recall any other Q45 chipset computers supporting 16GB.

No problem, we even get support questions about non-G.Skill products sometimes, guess it's hard to find real/good support these days.

Hi I to have the Optiplex 780 SFF ( Small Form Factor) as well.
I ran across this post when looking for which G.Skill modules to buy. There seems to be conflicting information. I recall when purchasing my pc the dell rep asked me if I wanted to upgrade to 16gb.

If you go to Dell's website http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...d=optiplex-780and select the optiplex 780 SFF and configure it it does give you the option to add "16GB DDR3 Non-ECC SDRAM,1333MHz, (4 DIMM) [add $670.00]" dell is insane on the price btw. But it does let you add it and check out, I opened up the system the motherboard part number is 03NVJ6.

I am confused as well as to what modules to buy. Currently there are already 2gb 2x (4gb) I want to max out the system. Maybe they ship a different 775 socket board for people that buy the 16gb option?

I just want to make sure the OP is not confusing the information with the USFF (ultra small)

                Howdy Surtak,

I do have the SFF and not the Ultra SFF.

There's a bit of conflicting documentation on Dell's site. I don't have the links anymore, but I do recall finding documents that said both 16GB and 8GB. The Dell reps I talked to said to only use 8GB, regardless of what documentation I found.

I did verify with Dell (and looking on the motherboard) the revision of the Optiplex SFF I have uses the Q45 chipset someone else is this thread mentioned. Based on Intel's documentation, this chipset only supports 8GB. The larger Optiplex cases in this line (at the time) used a different chipset which did support 16GB.

I decided against going with 16GB, since even it did work it would be a fluke, not officially supported by the chipset.

                      Is F3-13333C9D-8GNS won't work for optiplex 780?

So sure F3-13333C9D-8GNS does not work for optiplex 780?

I don't think so, 4GB single sided chips can be a problem for older main boards.
