  • desktop freezes at BIOS screen after installing new 16GB DDR3 mem

    CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 540 @ 3.07GHz
    MotherBoard : ASUS P7P55D-E LX (BIOS version : 1701 BIOS Build Data : 09/27/12)
    Old mem : G.SKILL RIPJAWS 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL9-9-9-24 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

Just purchased 16GB mem is :
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL

After replacing my old 4GB mem with this new 16GB mem, boot up freezes at bios screen
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/24544956/pic_2.jpg

Did some searching on the internet and learned that XMP/DOCP/EOCP needs to be enabled.

So I put back the old 4GB mem so that the computer can boot up and would allow me entering the BIOS.
    In the BIOS, enabled DOCP

Then edited the DRAM timing to set 10-10-10-30

Saved the change and power off the desktop. Took out the 4GB mem and put in 16GB mem. Powered it on.
Still the same. Bootup freezes at BIOS screen.

Moreover, I also tried enabling the XMP in the BIO. The profile has 9-9-9-24 timing by
default. I did the same above by manually setting the DRAM timing to 10-10-10-30. The same result.

Problem with the mem itself ? It came in not in a sealed package. Looks like it was returned before.

Could anyone help me with this problem ? Thanks

Unless they have drastically altered the BIOS on that particular mobo, it maxes at 16GB...but for a 16GB config it requires 4x4GB sticks, sorry, but it doesn't support 8GB sticks.

Pls offer comments on support I provide, HERE, in order to help me do a better job here:

Thank you for the quick response. The ASUS motherboard manual says nothing about max mem per dimm explicitly, although it does mention the max supported total mem is 16GB.

Max is typically total / slots = max DIMM size or 16 divided by 4 = 4GB per DIMM

Try running only one 8GB stick and see what happens. I have an Asus board (AM3 Socket - M4A89GTD Pro/USB3) that maxes out at 16GB and run a 2x8GB combination with no problems. If one stick runs, then test the other......I suspect you may be able to get one stick running but not the other, recent experience with a build left me stuck on the POST screen with one faulty stick of RAM being the problem.
