  • Compatibility with Dell Optiplex 780

I am considering buying a Dell Optiplex 780 Minitower with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and an Intel Core 2 Due E7500 with VT (I can't figure out what kind of motherboard). I would like to know whether it will be compatible with the following G.Skill product:

    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL

    Thanks, C. Wood

That computer only takes 8GB max, 2GB per slot, so you would need to purchase a 4 x 2GB kit.

I'm sorry, but that is WRONG!

I don't mean to be rude or to meddle in someone else's affairs, but the topic concerns ME and I know for a positive fact the information you have is WRONG!

The Dell Optiplex 780 is available in FOUR configurations:
      MT (Mini Tower)
      DT (Desktop)
      SFF (Small Form Factor)
      USFF (Ultra Small Form Factor)

Each memory slot of all four models can accept 4 GB DDR3 1066 or 1333 SDRAM. RAM rated 1333 will run at only 1066, a common enough thing.

The USFF model has only TWO memory slots and, thus, can accept only 8 GB total RAM. Of course, there is the usual caveat that in order to use more than 4 GB total RAM, one must have a 64-bit capable processor running a 64-bit operating system.

The other three models (MT, DT, and SFF) have FOUR memory slots and can accept a maximum of FOUR x 4 GB DDR3 1333 or 1066 SDRAM.

To verify this, you may either look inside my computer (not practical - LOL) or you may refer to Dell's technical guide linked below.

One difficulty which might present is that sometimes it is necessary to increase the voltage from 1.5 volts to perhaps 1.55 volts when using large amounts of SDRAM. The Dell BIOS does not permit voltage adjustments, so it will either work or it won't. But the capacity is definitely 16 GB (4 x 4 GB).

You are right, thanks for the info!

In that case, he would need this memory kit:
