  • Downclocking F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL or overclocking F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL?

    Hello,

I'm currently upgrading my computer with an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 mainboard and AMD FX-8350.

    Regarding the RAM I'm considering two G.Skill options, the 2133MHz CL11 F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL and the 1600MHz CL9 F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL.

I would like to run the RAM at 1866MHz, without any loss of speed compared to the standard settings. Would it be possible to either downclock the 2133 to 1866 with lower CL or overclock the 1600 ones, possibly with higher CL as long as it's not negating the MHz overlock? If so, which is the better option?

Also, when downclocking the 2133 to 1866 or in the worst case to 1600, would that allow me to use 4 modules with the mainboard and CPU? At the 2133MHz I believe it would not be possible.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

The DDR3-2133 kit uses better chips, so get that if you can even though the DDR3-1600 kit can do DDR3-1866 as well. The benefit would be at DDR3-1866 the timings can be lower.

With that motherboard and CPU, you can definitely achieve full slots of DDR3-1866. DDR3-2133 would require tweaking and testing.

    If you want 16GB, try 2 x 8GB or 4 x 4GB:

i'm in a similar situation. i'm looking to downclock my ram (this one) 8gb version, to 1866 because my computer is have weird no sleep resume issues. after testing, i found it that 2133 speed was the case, even though the mobo is rated for it.

i've downclocked the frequency to 1866, but the timings are set on auto, which are 11-11-11-28. considering how stock timings are 10-12-12-31 for 2133, can i just go incrementally down by 1? 9-11-11-31? or can i go even lower, say, 9-9-9-28? i have the same mobo but an fx-6300

Didn't you state in your other thread, that you had the resume-problem @ JEDEC settings as well? "1600 also screwed up."

Then it is probably not memory(-oc) related at all.

Yes, 9-11-11-31 should be fine, then you can test and tweak to see if it can be stable at lower timings.
