  • Locked BIOS DDR2 project.

I have a Dell Precision T3400 workstaion. It's a locked BIOS overclocking project. I already know how to overclock the CPU. It has an X38 chipset which supports DDR2-1066. The locked BIOS supports DDR2-800 with 6-6-6-18 timing. I have the latest BIOS and tried DDR2-1066 7-7-7-21. It just runs 800. Not surprised really.
The chipset also has hidden support for 400FSB. I will probably try a BSEL pinmod for that feature. I would like to see if the memory bus could follow along. I have other methods to try also. I don't have any control over the memory timings. I was thinking DDR2-1066 with 6-6-6-15 timing might work if I can get the bus speed up one way or another. This is a hobby type project so I don't expect guarantees this will work. I've seen IT sites where people say they run DDR2-1066. They don't say what speed it actually operates at. I just thought I'd get the advice of people who know more about this than I do. That would be just about anyone here I suppose.
Also I've never seen any 4GB DDR2-1066 modules. Do they not exist? 8GB is okay for what I do but 16GB is my capacity.

From the top of my head, i don't remember G.SKILL having any 2x4GB or 4x4GB kit above DDR2-800 (F2-6400CL5D-8GBPQ, F2-6400CL6D-8GBMQ and their respective quad equivalents).

I've been doing some reasearch on the X38 chipset. It looks like if I force the FSB to 400 the only boot strap for DDR2 provided is for DDR2-800. There are no other multipliers provided and with my BIOS situation that's probably the end of it.
Interestingly enough DDR3 straps are for 1066, or 1600 nothing for 1333! But I'm DDR2 only. Well that makes 4GB modules available so I'll just have to live with that. At least I know why it won't work. I might get 1066 to work at 1333 FSB but I don't think that's a good trade off. What I save on memory costs I'll add to the GPU budget and come out ahead that way.
      Thanks for the reply though.
BTW I'm want to try a 3 way Crossfire setup with old 2GB GPUs so I might need the extra memory caapcity for video texture storage.

Now that I know I'm looking at 4GB DDR2 800 I guess my question has changed.
I can get 400 FSB with DDR2-800 and my timing will be fixed at 6-6-6-18, 1.8V.
The chipset is good to about 450FSB, and I can probably bump up towards this in software.
Should I be looking for DDR2-800 CL5 to have some headroom for this?
What kind of speed should I expect at the above timing and voltage? 900?,1000?
