  • F3-1866C10Q-32GXL + GA-990FXA-UD7 + AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 3.6GHz

    Hi everyone!
I tried to search for the Gigabyte UD7, but didn't find specifics to my situation.

    Specs:
    CPU: AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.9GHz/4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+
    RAM: Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) (F3-1866C10Q-32GXL)
    Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD7 AM3+

    1) I've come to the understanding (after my purchase ) that my CPU WILL NOT run 32GB of ram at 1866 on this Motherboard as It requires using 4 DIMMs and the CPU will ONLY run ram at 1866 for 2 DIMMs. It seems that I'm left with the choice of running 16GB at 1866 or 32 GB at 1600. Am I correct so far?

Am I making the correct choice in running 32GB at 1600 instead of 16GB at 1866? (and in purchasing Windows 7 ultimate in order to even use 32 GB)

    2) The Hardware combination is resulting in a preset speed for the ram of 1333. I'd like to be able to boost it to at least 1600. I'm not sure exactly which settings to use in the BIOS. I'm not new to computers or hardware, I'm comfortable navigating the BIOS, but I'm new to this type of tuning and want to be sure not to do any damage.

Thanks ahead of time for any replies!

While AMD brought this 8150 out claiming it ran 1866 'natively' after I went back and forth with them for about a month and a half, they finally changed the advertising to reflect it a little bit truer, (it's actually native 1333) and they have been advertising it as it can RUN UP TO 1866 A 1 DIMM PER CHANNEL (2 DIMMs total), and that testing was done with 4 GB sticks. People have gotten the 8150 and 8350 to run 32GB generally at 1333 and some at 1600 - but haven't seen one yet running at 1866 (am thinking about getting a 8350 just to see what it can do). I got one of the first 8150 when they came out and couldn't really get it to do much, had been hoping they beefed up the MC (Memory Controller) but no joy. Will take a healthy OC as well as additional voltage to the MC and DRAM

So you're saying it's "iffy" as to whether I can even get my ram up to 1600? This is even more disappointing than I thought.

Is there a guide I can follow to try it out?
      Thanks for your response, Tradesman.

Might go ahead and try 1600 first, set CPU/NB freq to 2400, HT link to 2400, DRAM timings to spec for the moment, DRAM voltage 1.58, CPU/NB voltage 1.33, see how that does and let me know, I'll be in and out this evening, also might find some ref material in these two threads:

At the moment we have about 7-10 folks trying to get 32GB to run on AMD platforms and not having much luck, AMDs just don't seem to have the MC (Memory Controllers) for it

Just to be clear, the HT Link would actually be going down from 2600 to 2400. Is this likely ok?

Can stay at 2600, 2400 is the min required for 1600
