  • Can normal desktop RAM be used with a XEON on X79?

I have an ASUS P9X79-E WS fitted with a 4930K and a GSkill TridentX 32GB/2400 kit (4x8GB), latest BIOS, etc.

If I replace the 4930K with a XEON such as the E5-2687W v2 or 2680 v2, can I still use the same GSkill RAM kit? Or would I have to replace it with some ECC modules?

    Ian.

It will work fine, if any problems, make sure to have the latest BIOS

      Ok, thanks very much!! 8)

That being the case, I think I'll get XEONs for several systems I'm working on, including this:

The 2680 V2 looks to be a good option. Not sure whether the mbd will let me set the RAM speed to the max the GSkill kit can handle (it's an 8x4GB/2133 config), but even so, certainly more stable than an oc'd setup.
