  • Help with F3-17000CL9D-8GBXLD in Crosshair Formula V

I have a Crosshair Formula V with an FX 8350 Processor and (2x4GB) of the F3-17000CL9D-8GBXLD and the system will freeze randomly including in memtest. Sometimes i can go for 13 passes and others it will freeze with only 20% completed on one pass. I previously had a Phenom II 1100T (running the RAM at 1600) instead of the FX-8350 and it worked perfectly. I thought the CPU was faulty and RMA'ed it but the replacement is doing the exact same thing.

I have tried it at 1333 and at 1600 but it will still do the random freeze.

As a side note I have tested the CPU, RAM, PSU, Graphics card, SDD in another computer they all worked fine. I also tried a fresh install of windows 7 Ultimate (64bit). Temps are also good.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have a feeling it's your CPU, 8350 are rated to run UP TO 1866 AT 1 DIMM PER CHANNEL so 2133 may just be out of your CPUs range, short of adding additional voltage to CPU/NB and DRAM (a CPU OC wouldn't hurt either, and even then there's no guarantee of hitting 2133

Sorry I didn't clarify that I was not trying to hit 2133. I would be happy with 1333 or 1600 but with either one I still get random freezes.

Can you post your BIOS settings for DRAM, CPU, and voltages

            Try CPU/NB voltage at 1.32

Tried it with memtest and it froze 59 seconds in....

              Any other suggestions?

Have you run Memtest on each stick individually to see if you have a bad stick? Memtest takes awhile, so I normally just start w/ 4-5 passes on each stick

Re-tested each stick individually with five passes and no errors...I have been able to do that with both sticks in before. It just randomly decides to freeze...even while running memtest. I did 13 passes (both sticks) a couple of days ago running memtest overnight and when I went to check it the computer was froze again.

Do you have the latest BIOS and drivers for the mobo and GPU?

yep I have the newest BIOS update and all of the drivers for the motherboard and Graphics Card. With it freezing in memtest it shouldn't even get to the drivers though. I am thinking its either my BOIS settings or the motherboard might be bad.

Also to clarify I am using/testing with Memtest-86 v.4.0a booting up from a Burnt ISO CD.

Have you tried w/ EOCP/DOCP? Might try CPU/NB at 1.4

Kicked up the CPU/NB to 1.4 and it froze 34 minutes in on memtest with both sticks present. Using the same settings I could get each stick individually to go 12 hours on memtest before I would shut it off. 19/20 passes I thought was enough of a test.

Sounds like it might be a problem with mobo or CPU (MC - memory controller), might pull and check the CPU for thermal compound on bottom or in the socket, also check for any bent or broken pins

The CPU and motherboard are clean and there are no bent/broken pins... I guess the next step is to RMA the Motherboard. I just don't understand how one stick by itself will run with the board fine in either slot but they won't run together with the FX 8350 and the same sticks both run together on the Phenom II 1100T I have just fine. I can't help but think its a BIOS setting problem.
