  • G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200

I am getting a Asus Z270 ROG MAXIMUS IX FORMULA motherboard later today with 1 kit of G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200.The computer store where I am getting all my parts from only has the 16 gig kits. I want to have 32 gigs of memory installed so is it ok to add another 16 gig kit or should I order the 32 gig kit that has 2 sticks of 16 gig. Would it not be harder on the mem controller with the big 16 gig sticks compared to 4 sticks of 8 gig each. Any recommendation's appreciated...

Ideally you want a single 32GB kit whether it be 2 or 4 modules.

Is a 2 stick kit better for overclocking or is 4 stick better..

Which kit did you order exactly?

F4-3200C14D-16GVK should be decent overclockers, mine did DDR4-4000 CL16 no problem at 1.42V on ASUS ROG M8G. With more volts or a better board even DDR4-4133 would probably not have been an issue.

          The 32 gig kit was not in stock,they did have 6 kits in stock of G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 though.

They do have 4 kits in stock of G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Dual Channel Memory Kit 1.35V (F4-3200C16D-32GVK).Would it not be better maybe to order a 32 gig kit of G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C14 Memory Dual Channel Kit(F4-3200C14D-32GVR) .The CL14 would be better with the tighter timings over CL16,wouldn't it..

"G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200" is not specific enough to identify the model. There are like nine different kits that would fit that description including several CL16 variants.

For the F4-3200C14D-32GVR vs F4-3200C14D-16GVK / F4-3200C14Q-32GVK: Kits of single sided 8GB modules with Samsung 8Gbit B-Die usually overclock better than their 2x16GB counterparts, but the 2x16GB perform better at the identical settings. So at DDR4-3200 CL14 the 2x16GB kit outperforms the 2x8GB, but you probably won't hit DDR4-4133 with 2x16GB. Other than that overclocking memory with four modules is still harder than with only two modules on Sky and Kaby Lake, at least at upper frequency limit for each specific board (also boards with only two memory slots have an advantage for similar reasons, that's why the Z170M OCF and APEX are 2dimm designs).

Unless you are limited by your cpu cooler to Ripjaws V height, if you are looking for overclockable sticks at a reasonable price, also check out the Trident Z kits with DDR4-3200 CL14 specs - for 2x16GB you can expect ~ DDR4-3400/3466 CL14 and/or DDR4-3600 CL15/16 @ 1.4-1.5V (OC headroom varies from kit to kit / setup, so YMMV).
