  • Strange memory bios issue (not all 16gb detected)

    I recently got a 16gb DDR4 kit (F4-2666C15-4GRR), ASUS X99-A and 5820k.

In Bios, when I insert the memory's rated speed (2666mhz) and other settings (timings 15-15-15-35 & Voltage 1.20), the bios reports 12gb (sometimes 8gb or 4gb!!) out of 16gb after restart. This strange behaviour does not occur at all when I choose a different speed such as lets say 2750mhz (even though that's overclocked). why is this happening? Do I possibly have a defective DDR4 memory kit?

The reason I suspect the memory is because I recently took both my CPU and motherboard to my retailer who tested and told me that both are functioning correctly. I would love to know the reason behind this if at all possible. I appreciate this readers and of course the wonderful GSKILL tech team and would happily provide ANY information you request

Do you have the latest BIOS? Did you enable XMP? Try increasing the DRAM Voltage slightly to see if that helps.

I updated to latest bios (1702), applied XMP, raised ram voltage to 1.30-1.35v but still shows less than 16GB. I forgot to mention that this memory issue only occurs if I have the CPU overclocked (even slightest increase in CPU frequency). However having said that at a memory speed of 2750mhz I have CPU overclocked fine. would just like to know what is causing this, confused!

edit: Whether I use 100 or 125 CPU strap, bios refuses to detect full 16gb when ram speed at 2666mhz manually (tried higher DRAM voltages and loosen memory timings too) even at default CPU speed. could this be some strange compatibility issue with this X99-A mobo and memory at 2666mhz?

Should be no problem at all, sounds like a voltage problem.

        Did you try increasing VCore?

If you mean the cpu voltage then I have tried that.

Edit: what I done was 4.2ghz up to 1.275v. Don't really want to go higher incase I fry the cpu lol

If possible, post some pictures of BIOS and we can take a look. Did you contact ASUS to see if they have any idea?

I have contacted ASUS and advised me to go back to my retailer to check my motherboard. The retailer said my motherboard has been tested and is functioning properly (they used a different memory brand at 2666mhz though). Here is link showing BIOS settings with XMP applied and only 12 out of 16gb being detected.

Feel free to send the memory in for RMA exchange to see if a new kit works better.

Finally I may have found out why the memory is not fully detected in bios by pure chance. I use a wireless usb adaptor (ALFA network model no. AWUS036NH) and when plugged and restart the memory issue occurs however when unplugged the memory issue is gone. This tells me that the issue lies with the motherboard/bios/usb boot rather than memory sticks. ASUS only yesterday released a bios update (1801) which addresses 16gb support however I still have the issue. I will contact ASUS regarding this issue and hope they will investigate and release a bios fix in near future.

At least a temporary solution would be to plug wireless usb adaptor after booting to OS (unplug adaptor before system shutdown) or simply overclock memory to 2750/2800 depending on cpu strap used while keeping wireless adaptor plugged.

Thank you for your great support, I appreciate this and will always stick with GSKILL because of your fantastic support. Thank you again and take care

I know I said it was a wifi adaptor as the cause. well I was wrong. the memory problem still occurs even without a wifi adaptor installed at all. looks like I'm going to keep RMA as a last resort option once I have finished my own investigations.
