  • TridentX Compatibility - F3-2666C12D-16GTXD

I just bought a set of TridentX DDR3 2666MHz CL12 (F3-2666C12D-16GTXD) and I have a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming GT board. The GT board isn't listed on the QVL for the TridentX DDR3 2666MHz CL12, but the GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 is. Supposedly the GT is a more beefed up version of the 5, so I was a little surprised the GT board wasn't listed. I also checked the specs on the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming GT from Gigabyte and saw they have the F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD on their compatibility list. This is similar to the F3-2666C12D-16GTXD except it's CL11 vs C12. If the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming GT can take 2666 MHz CL11 shouldn't it also be able to take CL12? Does the Cas make that big of a difference for compatibility?

A certain MB + Memory combo not being listed only tells you it was not tested in the lab. G.SKILL probably did not have a Z97X- Gaming GT available for testing and likewise Gigabyte only had the F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD available in their lab. While both kits use similar ICs, the F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD is a 4x4GB kit and uses an older slightly more advanced bin.

If you already bought the kit, why not just try it? Use the recommended memory slots and enable the XMP in the UEFI.

That was I was thinking. I was just trying to be preemptive to see if there was any glaring issue I was missing. They had compatibility for the GT listed with the 2400MHz TridentX, so I just seemed a little inconsistent. Most likely will work, but I'll follow up once I get the sticks in.
