  • Motherboard compatability question

    Hi guys.

    I am looking to purchase 4 x 4gb of G.SKILL DDR3-1866 PC3-14900 ram. (16gb in total)

Will this work without any trouble in a Gigabyte GA-879-UD3 motherboard?

These things just confuse the hell out of me!

    Many thanks in advance.

You have good reason to be frustrated, advertising by mobo makers, especially in relation to DRAM is a pet peeve of mine which I explain briefly in this thread:

    http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=10566

I also have a slightly enhanced piece on the subject at Benchmarkreviews.com

    http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...20387&Itemid=8

Getting to your mobo, yes, it states it will run 1866 when the CPU is overclocked. With AMD in particular, the bigger question is whether your CPU can run 4 sticks of 1866, and you didn't mention the CPU. For 16GB 4x4GB you might be able to do it with an FX-8150 using a good OC and additional voltages to the DRAM, CPU and CPU/NB (also helps to have a 'Good' 8150). Chances should be better with an FX-8350. You'll also want to have the latest BIOS for the best compatibility.

Thank you for the quick reply and apologies for not posting the CPU. Ironic, as I did
read the "Read before posting" thread and it still slipped my mind.

      AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor.

I have never overclocked this as I wouldn't know how!

I will read your threads,(could you repost the first link to your brief thread) I'm sure they will be helpful as you appreciate the fact that specs look like a foreign language to some (me).

      Thanks again

Sorry bout that, had that mobo window behind the good one and pulled off the mobo URL - it's corrected above and here it is:

The 1055 might carry 1866 with an OC, but might want to consider going 1600 (CL8 or 9), overall performance wise there's not a ton of difference

          Thank you.

Great threads. It's nice to see some clarity in a confusing subject.

I will probably run it at the 1600 you suggest. Would I need to alter anything in the bios to achieve this?

Believe you mobo has DOCP,, if so can set it to 1600 and if BIOS is ready, should be good, if not, we have a thread that helps set up 1600 sticks with AMD here:

            http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=7688

And of course, if you have problems, give us a shout
