  • need help getting my ram to 1600mhz

Hello got this rig from my uncle as he was upgrading to something better so i figured i'd try to get the most out of it, but i am unfamiliar with manual overclocking. Any ideas of what i could get out of this system? I am not sure whether to use the xmp timings listed or which values to change so any help would be appreciated.

    Specs are:

    Athlon II X4 640 propus 3.0
    Board: msi 970a-g43
    ram: ripjaws 12800cl8d-8gbxm
    gpu: radeon hd 6950 1gb
    psu: 650w bronzeplus corsair
    windows 7 64-bit professional

    Thanks in advance

First thing I would do is download a program called CPU-Z (just google it its everywhere). open it and look only at the MEMORY TAB, tell us what it says there. It will tell us if its clocked properly or not, if it is done correctly it should say 800 MHz, with 8-8-8-24 timings, but I'm not 100% sure that cpu will like 1600 mzh memory so it may be 667 mzh, can probably get 7-8-8-24 timings out of it at 1333 mhz.

Not much else you can do other than perhaps OC the processor some if you have an aftermarket cooler.

Okay I would go into bios and try and set the dram speed to 1333 MHz, change timings to 7-8-8-24 and see if it boots, never a way to tell for sure bit that memory is more than capable it will come down to what your processor is capable of.

          Thanks Supahos for the help
So should i just change exactly whats listed on the memory tab? Because there are many categories set to auto, guessing i should just leave those alone?

first thing is to try and raise the frequency to 1333 MHz (pretty sure you can't get 1600 out of it, if you can it will take someone with more knowledge of your setup than myself) and then change the timings to what I listed above. Should be a pretty simple change. It may or may not boot (may require a FSB OC to do so)

I think i will do some more research on manual overclocking and then try those values out.

Any good reading material you know of?

Anyways thanks again for the help

Not really I've always just kind of goofed around with settings until I hit on something that works. As long as you don't start changing voltages hap hazardly you can't hurt a computer changing timings/speeds. If it won't boot just try again, but less aggressively.

Thats good to hear, you can make a run @ 1600 if you wish now, 8-9-9-24 would be the new timings

Tried those values and they don't work, so the conclusion here is that this processor does not like 1600. But i i have played around with the fsb and got the cpu to 3.45 and the ram 1512 which is weird to me, but whatever it works. thanks again

That should be a pretty big boost over what it was before (1066 with "meh" timings) Should be noticeably faster between the memory increase and processor OC.
