  • Memory compatability

I am looking to upgrade my memory on a Gigabyte X79-UP4 LGA 2011 motherboard. The MB specs for memory are:

    8 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets
    4 channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules
    Support for non-ECC memory modules
Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules
I am looking at using RipjawsX 32GB (4 x 8GB)DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) F3-2133C9Q-32GTX because I may upgrade later to 64Gb depending upon my performance needs. Thsi way I only need to use 4 slots now and I can fill 4 slots later.

I need to know if this is going to be compatable before I spend considerable cash on an upgrade that will not work.

The only thing I can see different in the specs is the voltage. The MB specs say 1.5v and the memory says it is tested at 1.6v although the SPD voltage is 1.5v.

    Will it work?

You don't mention what CPU, for 2133 it will require an OC so if you have a K model CPU, you should be good to go. If running a 3820 CPU, think I'd suggest 1600 or 1866

The CPU is i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E Model BX80619i73820 (3.6GHz) Quad Core ... but I am looking at upgrading the processor to the i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E Model BX80619i73930K (3.2Ghz) Six Core, but it is pricy.

If I stay with the current processor (3820) what is the best memory for a 4x8Gb setup?

If thinking of upgrading, your selection would be good. If you were to have to drop the freq with the 3820 could tighten timings and still get near 2133 performance, then with the K model 2133 should be a breeze
