  • F3-12800CL7D-4GBHZ - 8GB @ 1600 MHz

I own 2 sets of GSkill F3-12800CL7D-4GBHZ, i.e. 4 sticks of 2 GB with total of 8GB. I use it in Asus "P5E3 Premium/WiFi-AP @n" motherboard with Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 (3.2GHz @ 1600 FSB ). I have the latest BIOS version 0704. My PSU is rated at 1000W and can supply 80A on a single rail (right now my average power consumption is less than 450W). I do not overclock anything. When I boot up BIOS shows memory as "dual channel", whether I use 2 or 4 sticks.

I have trouble getting my memory to run at above 1066 Mhz when I have 8 GBs installed. I can run it at 1600 Mhz, as it is rated, only if I have 4GB installed.

I ran MemTest for over 40 hours with different combination of memory sticks, slots, and BIOS settings. What I found was that all of my motherboard slots work properly with 1 or 2 sticks at 1600 Mhz. However, once I insert 2 more sticks of memory my "auto" setting in BIOS drops memory timing to 1066 MHz and does not allow me to select XMP profile. If I manually set timing and voltage (per spec), I cannot pass MemTest and operating system crashes within few seconds of boot.

My computer is stable with Gskill memory running at 1066 Mhz (1.9v), but I would like to get the rated performance of 1600 Mhz, so that my RAM does not bottleneck motherboard and cpu. Even 1300 would be a huge improvement at this point. Could you suggest anything that I could try?

Am I missing something about the way dual channel DDR3 works and incorrectly assuming that it is possible to have more than 2 sticks of DDR3 work at its rated speed? What are my options to get 8GBs of DDR3 at 1600Mhz or above?

for 4 sticks, it normally could only work at DDR3 1333 CL9/8 on dual channel platform
and we also only guarantee for 2 sticks in dual channel, not four sticks
it's not memory issue, it should be limited by memory controller in chipset
    thanks

Thanks, that explains what I have been seeing in MemTest.

Would I still use 1.9 voltage in 1333 CL9/8 configuration for F3-12800CL7D memory? For CL7 @ 1600 I was using 7-7-7-18. Could you suggest timings that might work for CL9/8?

Another question, if I change mother board to a one that supports triple channel memory, would I need to get different type of GSkill memory, or will 3 sticks of F3-12800CL7D still work in triple channel mode?

      Thank you.

        we'd recommend you to boot with DDR3 1333 9-9-9-24 2T@1.5v
if you want to get better timing, you could try 8-8-8-21, but we can't be sure if it works
and for X58 chipset, we didn't test dual channel memory on triple channel chipset, so we can't be 100% sure if it works
        thanks
