  • 4 gig memory upgrade

    Asus A8N-E
    4-1 gig G.Skill F1-3200PHU1-1GBNT
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Toledo

I am having problems with all of the RAM installed (4 gig).
I get file corruptions (i.e. torrents), occasional blue screens, mainly anything that's memory intensive will corrupt or shut down (programs).
The timings in the BIOS are correct but I had to manually set them (3-4-4-8 2T).
If I set it all to auto, the BIOS will set the RAM speed to 333mhz. I admit that I haven't left the RAM at 333mhz long enough to check the PCs stability.

If I only use two gig of the memory, the PC is as stable as a rock.
I'd really like to use all of it.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

What voltage options are available? You need to raise the NB Voltage or CPU-NB Voltage. The memory controller may be slightly overloaded.

I wondered about that. I guess I need to experiment more.
The voltage requirements of the RAM is 2.6V to 2.75V.
Should I try a higher voltage? What do you recommend I try?
The motherboard can go to 3.0V.

Oops. I now realize what you are saying.
I can up the CPU voltage but I don't think I can up the NB voltage by itself, unless it's one and the same.
I'll need to check that out.

        Thanks.

          O.K. Here we go.
I installed all 4 1 gig sticks of RAM.
Set the timing at 3-4-4-8 2T with the voltage at 2.75V.
I set the speed at 400mhz.
I also set the voltage for the processor at it's max of 1.35V.
There is no setting for the northbridge voltage for my A8N-E motherboard.

I am using the PC in question to write this so it's doing well for the moment.
I'll let you know how it does over time.

          Thanks.

Ran Memtest inside of windows all night and it showed four errors so it didn't work.
In the past I have booted to memtest and ran it for 24 hours with no errors so there is no need to do that again.

I have dropped the speed down to 333mhz with the same timings/voltage and will try again tonight.
I have been using the PC for 3 hours now with no ill effects. It would have blue screened on me by now if the speed was at 400mhz.

            Laters.

              No errors at 333mhz.
I am now using all 4 gig of RAM at 333mhz without any problems.
Installed Windows 7 X64 this morning so I'll report back in a week on the PCs stability.

              Thanks to all that helped.

It should be fine. Because you lowered the frequency, less stress is placed on the memory controller, so there is no longer a need to raise voltages to stabilize. This is common as 4 modules places much more stress on the memory controller versus only two modules. You can look at it as double.

                Thank you

                  She's good.
I downloaded a few torrents and ripped a few DVDs for the past week.
                  My PC did everything perfectly.
It seems the socket 939 memory controller cannot handle 4 gig of memory at 400mhz.
At least my 4200+ x2 can't handle it.
It may be time for me to go AM3 and use the 939 hardware as a theater PC.
Then again, maybe not. The 939 is running real good now.

                  Thanks to all that helped.
