  • After exchanging RAM - sometimes he boots, sometimes not

    my system spec:

    computer manufacturer: www.targa.de , support serial-nr.: C46537003424

model of the motherboard: Gigabyte GA-K8NF9-SI (Targa Edtion)
    Bios Version GA-K8NF-9 / GA-K8NF9-SI F7 TARGA
    (08/31/2005-NF-CK804-6A61FG0AC-00)
(bases on model "GA-K8NF9 Ultra (Rev 1.x)" or "GA-K8NF-9 (Rev 1.x)")
model of the memory: [NS] G.SKILL DDR PC 3200, 4 x 1.0 GB
model of the CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+

    my problem:

Every third to fourth time I start the computer, he hangs in the boot process before mounting the ide-controller:

    boot ...
    Bios Version GA-K8NF-9 / GA-K8NF9-SI F7 TARGA
    memory testing: 3407872K OK
    memory information: Dual Channel, 128-bit
    ... nothing more ...

I get no beep-codes from motherboard, error message or something else ...

The other times he starts correctly.

It doesn't matter, if I start the computer or I make a reboot.

I have installed the last motherboard drivers.
    I don't get a bios-update from the computer-manufacturer.
But they got me the information, that I shouldn't make a bios-update from the gigabyte homepage, because the motherboard in "Targa Edition can be a modification"

My knowledge is limited and I do not know anymore.
It cost me a lot of time and it charged my hardware.
I urgently ask for your support.

K8 platform do not support 4 sticks of DDR 400 memory
try to only install 2 sticks or downgrade the memory frequency to DDR 333
      thanks

This is known to me, the memory frequency is set to 333. The computer starts as I said in part easily and sometimes not at all!

please try to install only 2 sticks to check if it's 4 sticks' issue
            thanks

              OK I did it ...

OK, I did it with 2 sticks and had no more problems.

I don't understand it, because according to the motherboard manual explicitly the support of 4 DDR DIMM DDR 400 modules should be possible.

              And now

it's correct that they accept 4 sticks of ram, but because of the limitation of AMD K8 memory controller, it could only run DDR 333 while 4 sticks are installed
and it would also be more difficult to run stably
                thanks

Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand the problem.

Should this mean that the sticks are not backwards compatible?

What could you do to help me?

we'd recommend you to install only 2 sticks, 'coz 4 sticks may make system unstable
or you could change to DFI motherboard, it seems to have better compatibility to run 4 sticks
                    thanks

The computer works with 333 MHz memory clock (look at my sysinfo.log). He works always stable when it he started. But he doesn't always start!

Please tell me, what is the meaning of "DFI motherboard"

as we have said, K8 939 platform do not have good compatiblity with 4 sticks of memory, even at frequency DDR 333
and as we tested, only DFI's nF4 motherboard has better compatibilty to install 4 sticks of 1GB memory
                          but it still depends

and DFI is a motherboard manufacturer, such as ASUS or Gigabyte
