  • Problem F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK with P5Q-E

    MB: P5Q-E bios 1406
    Proc: E8400
    Mem: Gskill F2-8500CL5K-2GBPK
    Windows XP Pro SP3

Despite the informations given on Asus & GSkill web sites, my P5Q-E doesn't seems to like the F2-8500CL5K-2GBPK too much.
I set the memory in the bios to 2.1 volt & 1066.

With MEMTEST86+ 2.1 errors are shown when I install the 2 sticks together working dual mode but when I test each stick on its own no errors occur.

Win XP seems to work fine but when I play Battlefield 2 after 10 to 12 minutes the computer freezes for several minutes, then back to the game, freezes again , and finally comes back to the desktop.

Any idea, do I have to change my sticks ?

    Thanks

try to install the 2 stiks on slot 2 and 4
or set them all default to test if your video card is fine
    thanks

ok I'm gonna try slots 2 and 4.
But my graphic card (HD4850) worked perfectly with my former motherboard (A8N-sli) & my GSKILL DDR 2x1GB.
I'll let you know about the slot switching.

Using memory slots 2 and 4 seems better, I just played BF2 for 3 hours with no freezing or bugs.
Memory is set to 2.1v and 1066 and it works perfectly so far.
But I really wonder why does it not work with slots 1 and 3 ?? Will I be able to add memory on these slots later ?
Well for the time i'll continue my testing.
Thanks for the suggestion to use the 2 other slots.

slot 2 and 4 are recommend for overclocking, so it would be easier to reach DDR2 1066
          thanks

This is weird cause the Asus motherboard manual says exactly the contrary 'it is recommended to install the memory modules from the yellow slots (slots 1 & 3) for better overclocking ?!?!

But still it works fine on slots 2 & 4.

Sadly changing mem sticks from slots didn't work for long, today after 15 minutes playing BF2 I have bugs like I had before, the screen is frozen, game lags.
After checking the memory with MEM86+ v2.1 it shows errors again.
              Any suggestions ?
              I'm so dissapointed.

Is the temperature of the memory too high to touch?
If so, please add another fan on it
'coz your HD 4850 is also very hot, too

I'm away from home for the week but I'll try to touch the memory next week end.
It's true that the HD4850 gets very high (8? to 90?c) but it didn't bothered my former GSKILL DDR1 memory.
Nevertheless I set my memory to 2.2 volts and for the next 2 days it worked OK.
I need to keep on my testing but it could be the solution.
                  I'll keep you informed.

                  Thanks

The memory is not hot to touch at all, it seems like it is not the issue.

I think i'm gonna test it a little bit further to see if I can not make it stable. Today my memory test says there's no problem but yesterday I had some frozen screens. Thanks anyway for offering I'll RMA if I can't fix the problem.
By the way how long does it take to RMA from France ?

                        Thanks for your quick answers.

Good news, it seems that the ATI Catalyst Control Center was involved in my problems. Since I re-installed entirely Win XP it works perfectly.
Still I have not explanation about the errors I had with memtest.
I kept the voltage to 1.2v, mem slots 2 & 4 are used.

Thanks very much to the GSkill support to be so efficient, you showed me I could trust in your products and in the people who make them.
