  • F3-12800CL7D-4G Issues - Won't Run At Specified Timings!

Ok I am having issues getting my new RAM to run at the speeds stated on the packaging and also G.Skill website.

    The RAM in question is the G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit - (F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH)

My system spec is as follows:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE (Stock)
    Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UDP5 - Bios F6 (Latest)
    G.Skill Ripjaw 4Gb (F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH)
    ATi Radeon 1900XT 512Mb (Stock)
    2 x Segate Barracuda ST3500418AS 500Gb SATA2

And so on .... now this memory is rated to run at 7-7-7-24-2T @ 1600Mhz @ 1.65v as per packaging, the stickers on the heatsinks say 7-7-7-21 @ 1600Mhz @ 1.65v.

The problem comes when they are in my system, in dual channel mode, it detects them but runs them at completely the incorect timings, something like 9-11-10-9-40 @ 1333Mhz @ 1.60v which is crazy.

I have had them running at 7-7-7-24-1T @1333Mhz @ 1.60v, also had them running at 9-9-9-24-2T @ 1600Mhz @ 1.60v however I can't at get them to work at 7-7-7-24-2T @ 1600Mhz @ 1.65v ... anyone got any pointers for me here, I am not willing to run this memory slower than it is supposed to go, what is the point in doing that, it's like buying a horse and running youself, totally stupid.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

This has been a common issue. 1600 will only operate 8-8-8-27, 1333 7-7-7-24, with this motherboard. You will need to wait for a BIOS update. Other companies such as MSI have already released theirs so they are able to, but many boards are still in the dark until they release a new BIOS to handle CL7 at 1600.

That is why we only list this memory package for P55 platforms only, for now.

    Thank you

Thanks for the swift reply, if I set my system to run at 8-8-8-27, what should the other settings be set to?

Should this be at 1.60v or 1.65v?

Well just an update as it might come in useful to others. I have been messing around with the timings on this RAM and have managed to get it running VERY close to the specified 7-7-7-24-2T stated on the product.

On the Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UDP5 motherboard flashed with the latest F6 bios, I have got it running at 8-7-7-24-1T @ 1.65v @ 1600Mhz ... and I'm rather pleased with this indeed.

To be honest there is not a LOT of different at all between 7-7-7-24-1T @ 1.60v @ 1333Mhz and 8-7-7-24-1T @ 1.65v @ 1600Mhz ... little difference in SiSandra benchmarks and no noticable difference at all in real-world performance.

Good memory all in all, however still awaiting Gigabyte to released a bios update that will support the "True" 7-7-7-24-2T @ 1600Mhz ... but until then, this will do me for now

With regards to my post above what would be the best settings for the following?

          TwTr Command Delay
          Trfc 0 for DIMM1
          Trfc 2 for DIMM2
          Trfc 1 for DIMM3
          Trfc 3 for DIMM4
          Write Recovery Time
          Precharge Time
          Row Cycle Time
          RAS to RAS Delay

          Many Thanks.

            Couple of thoughts

            1. Am assuming you have the sticks in slots 1-2 (Blue), have you tried in 3-4?
            2. For the voltage, would set it at 1.65 till you get all running and stable, then can try lower.
            3. Depending on how your mobo sets tRFC would try 127ns or 64 (or as close as it allows
            4. Also you are looking for 7-7-7-24, have you tried 7-7-7-21 at CR of 2T

Pls offer comments on support I provide, HERE, in order to help me do a better job here:

I have this exact problem on my P55 Intel motherboard and cant run the ram at 1600 with 7 7 7 24 timing, only 8 8 8 24. The sticker say 7 7 7 21. Do I need a bios update too? I have another post on this same topic with the Intel p55 motherboard.

In my opinion it is always worth flashing to the latest bios if you are having issues with component compatability, have a look on your motherboard manufacturers website and see if there is a bios update for your board, if there are any it will probably give you a list of what has been changed in it etc so you will be able to see if any memoy compatability issues have been addressed.

I am running the latest BIOS. The board was just released 2 weeks ago and the first thing I did was update to the latest BIOS. The ram still will not work at its advertised speeds.

The system is stable at 8 8 8 24 2T at 1600MHz at 1.6v. At 7 7 7 24 or 7 7 7 21 at both 1.65 and 1.60v the system becomes unstable and I get errors like BAD_POOL and various IRQ and other blue screen faults. This mostly occurs with applications that use a lot of memory like games and when I am rendering video. If the system is sitting idle it is generally stable and it does boot at these faster timings. My memory is listed as 7 7 7 21 @ 1.65v on the label, and the SPD has 7 7 7 21 2T @ 1.6v programmed into it.

Try testing them individually to see if you have a bad stick. Or run memtest and that should give you some information as well. Keep us posted, feel free to move this to your own thread.

                        Thank you

When I try each stick individually one never fails and the other only fails very very infrequently at the faster timings. When they are together running dual channel then the system fails much more frequently. Interestingly enough, memtest runs fine (at least for 1.5 hours) without any failures with the higher timings, but windows will crash. If the system is run at 8 8 8 24 then it is completely stable and never crashes.

I am not sure how to move this to a separate thread.

Regarding moving the thread, I meant continuing in your own. I believe you already made your own... but either way works. If Windows crashes with one stick, memtest may not be picking up the error. Post up some screen shots of your BIOS or list the advanced timings. Something may not be picking up correctly causing instability.
