  • Mixing RAM

    Hey all,

Last year I bought some DDR4 RAM and got it up and running with XMP easily.

    G.SKILL TridentZ Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel Z170 Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-8GTZB

With the holiday season (and sales) I decided to grab some extra RAM since it was on sale.

    G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel Z170 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-32GVK

Now, I can have them all in at once, totaling 40gb. But I can only get them to run at 2133mhz. The XMP doesn't work, presumably because they're different kits. But from what I've seen they're rated for the exact same timings, voltage, and speed.

Is there any way I can get them all running at 3200mhz?

The rest of my setup for reference (everything is up to date):

MSI Gaming Z170A GAMING PRO LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard

    Intel Core i5-6600K 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80662I56600K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 530

    1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-2972-KR 4GB GAMING w/ACX 2.0, Silent Cooling Graphics Card

    I appreciate your thoughts!

    Thanks!

There are more than just the primary timings and with two kits utilizing different density ICs, it is very likely there are differences among the secondaries. However usually the lower density kit has no or at least less issues running the timings from the higher density part. So you can try the following: Just install the 2x16GB kit, then enable the XMP, reboot and then set all primary & secondary timings from the XMP manually before adding the older kit.

If it doesn't work i wouldn't bother with it and just ditch the older kit. In most use cases going from 32GB to 40GB is not worth the trouble anyways.
