  • 6GB DDR3, only 4GB shows up, 64-bit OS

Model of the motherboard: MSI X58 Platinum SLI
BIOS version MS-7522 (X58 Platinum SLI) version 3.40 (the latest)
    Model of the memory: G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ
    Model of the CPU: Core i7 920 2.66GHz OC'd to 3.5GHz

What is the problem?: Only 4GB of RAM shows up in Vista, and in BIOS. I am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. The motherboard supports up to 24GB of RAM. The full 6GB of ram does show up in CPUz, but not in system information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try testing each memory stick individually to see if you have a defective stick. If not, try the other 3 slots and see if you still get the same results. Keep us posted on the results.

Are all the sticks firmly in place and locked down? Should be in the 1-3-5 slots (blue). Do you have the latest BIOS, 3.6?, can be found here

          http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=do...1&prod_no=1703

Base timings, Command Rate/Timing, Dram voltage should all be input manually. Is your system showing a full 4 GB or is it 3. something?

I updated BIOS to the latest version the last time you told me to, which was 3.4. I haven't updated again to 3.6 because flashing my BIOS is dangerous and there isn't any reason for it. I don't have a floppy drive or a flash stick, and updating via Windows is a horror story waiting to happen. :x

I never did input "Base timings, Command Rate/Timing, Dram voltage" manually. I don't even know how. Is that the problem?

Have you tested each stick individually w/ memtest to see if ones bad? Have a friend bringing a copy of your manual over later today and will take a look.......does your BIOS have an option for dual or tri channel operations? If so it should be set to tri-channel. Should be back later today with more info

Make sure memory frequency is set to DDR3-1600. Memory Multiplier should be 12. (133 x 12 = 1596 or 1600)

                Memory timings tCL 9 - tRCD 9 - tRP 9 - tRAS 24 - Command Rate 2
                Memory Voltage 1.60V

Once that is complete, everything should be fine. If not, try testing each stick individually to determine whether a stick may be defective. If you continue to have an issue, simply send them in for new replacements.

                Thank you

In EVEREST it says something about 1333 MHz... Does this mean I bought the wrong RAM?

If that's the case, is it possible to exchange it for the correct type?

If that's not the case, can you explain how to change these things?

Everything is fine, except the memory is still at DDR3-1333. Simply enter your BIOS and set DRAM Frequency to DDR3-1600 and everything should be fine.

How would I go about changing that in the MS-7522 (X58 Platinum SLI) version 3.40 BIOS?

I didn't see what I was supposed to change in the Cell Menu to change that... I couldn't change DRAM Voltage either because it was set on [Auto] and [Auto] was grayed out and I couldn't change it. There was also this thing that said Memory Ratio and it had the options 3-8, but I don't know if that's it. There was also tRP and I don't know what that is. And the tRAS setting can only go from 9-23. Oh and there is no tCL, it says CAS Latency [CL], and... I did set the Command Rate to 2T now.

Set Memory Ratio to 6 and everything should be fine.

Timings and Voltage should be able to detect on their own.

                        Thank you

That's not right... I set it to that and it just made the computer restart 4 times then it said it the overclock failed and it restored defaults.

Are you sure that's the right number?

I tried 6, 5 and 4. All of them failed.

Send me pictures of your BIOS. You stated an overclock, so something must not be set properly.

                            6:1 is a 12:2 memory ratio, BCLK 133 x 12 = DDR3-1600

So depending on what your BCLK is set to, memory target frequency should be near DDR3-1600.

                            Thank you
