  • AHCI vs IDE mode

    in case someone may find this topic interesting and wants to know more about it

    I used EVEREST to test the my Gskill Falcon 128GB w/ 64MB DRAM w/ 1571 firmware

    My system spec:
    SU9400 + 4GB DDR3 memory
    =======================
    average access read:

    Intel AHCI (ICH9M) v 8.2
    0.18ms ~ 0.20ms ( mostly around 0.18~0.19

    Intel AHCI (ICH9M) v 8.8
    0.16ms ~ 0.18ms ( mostly around 0.16~0.17

    Intel IDE (ICH9M driver instead of XP's general driver)
    0.16ms ~ 0.18ms (mostly 0.16ms

    ========================
    Random Read Rate:

    AHCI (v8.8)
    average : 172.9 MB/s
    Max: 189.8 MB/s
    Min: 93.1 MB/s
    CPU % (average): 3 %

    IDE
    average : 183.6 MB/s
    Max: 203.5 MB/s
    Min: 159 MB/s
    CPU % (average): 11 %

    ===================
    To me, I observe a totally reversed results.
    People usually say AHCI uses more CPU and gives faster performance,
    For me, it seemed like opposite.
    IDE actually uses more CPU while being faster.
    and AHCI uses less CPU but being slower.

    ==================
    wiper does work out, ( but I used non-gskill wiper )
    and after wiper,
    speed generally increased at least 15MB/s for AHCI ( don't think it increased much for IDE, it was actually a bit slower for IDE if I remembered correctly)
    (the results above are "after wiper" results)
